    Heifer Project, Overlook Farm

Visited the Heifer Project Overlook Farm one town over in Rutland for a delicious pancake breakfast with the family and guests.  Then outside to tour the sugar maple hut, various barns, and the international village.  This is quite a place with quite a mission.  It's a working farm that donates livestock and food throughout the world..as well as educating the public about poverty and hunger.

Also scouting out bicycle loops...beautiful bike riding in this area...one nasty hill.  Next weekend's ride with the Seven Hills Wheelmen goes past this farm.

You can read these letters to your kids...

This is a letter I received from Usiel in Mexico the other day:

    Dear Michael,

Thank you again dear godfather.  Let me tell you that I did pass to 4th grade with a low average grade but I promise to study hard this coming school year.  I fell down from a tree and I feel on my back, I did cry because one of my fingers hurt real badly.  My mother calls for my attention because of going up the tree.  I want you to write to me more.  Let me tell you that I still have my grandfather [father is dead] who is 84 years old and he gets upset easily by my grandmother is 75 years old and she is very nice.  My mother works at Issemyn (government medical institution) she works at the maintenace department.  Godtfather please do pray for all my family.  My mother is sick of chronical fibrosis please do pray for her so she will heal soon.  I have a dog her name is Pelusa but she likes to bite is someone touches her she bites.  I send you a big hug.  I hope you send me your prompt response.  I say goodbye to you.

I know I risk the perception "Look at me touting my charity".  I will take that risk of being misunderstood for the opportunity of sharing what it is like to receive these letters.  The short money it takes to donate is nothing to so tout.  And giving, and receiving letters such as these makes you feel good and helps others a good deal.  Plus, you get to read these letters to your kids to give them some perspective.
