    Gettysburg National Park

One of the things I wanted to do on my visit to Lancaster County, PA was to visit Gettysburg National Park.  I've read countless books on the Civil War, watched movies...but actually visiting the battlefield fills a lot of gaps and is an incredibly moving experience.  The highlights for me were:

    • my son Ethan, age 9, is turning into a bit of a history buff and enjoyed Gettysburg as much, or more, as the trip to Hershey amusement park
    • getting the various spots...Little Round Top, Peach Orchard, Wheatfield, Devil's Den, the Angle ....in geographic context with one another.
    • the size of the open field that Pickett's men had to cross
    • the highwater mark...and how close it was to the stonewall

A beautiful park, and a beautiful day.

    Beantown Trolley

Spent a wonderful afternoon in Boston on a company outing.  We went on a Beantown Trolley Tour which was interesting and enjoyable.  Having lived in Massachusetts my whole life, it is amazing how much I didn't know about the history of Boston.  I suppose I am like one of those New Yorkers who has never seen the Statue of Liberty.  Then we had a couple of excellent beers, wine tasting of some fabulous wines, and all sorts of food.  I feel like I am in a time warp to some 1999 pre-bubble zone of happiness.

Cruisecontrol in the rain, don't use it

    NEVER KNEW THIS BEFORE...

I wonder how many people know about this?
A 36 year old female had an accident several weeks ago and
    Totaled her car.

A resident of Kilgore, Texas, she was traveling between
Gladewater & Kilgore.. It was raining, though
not excessively, when her car suddenly began to
hydro-plane and literally flew through the air. She
was not seriously injured but very stunned at the
    sudden occurrence!

When she explained to the highway patrolman what
had happened he told her something that every driver
should know - NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN WITH
YOUR CRUISE CONTROL ON. She had thought she
was being cautious by setting the cruise control and
maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain.

But the highway patrolman told her that if the
cruise control is on and your car begins to hydro-plane --
when your tires lose contact with the pavement, your
car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed and you
take off like an airplane. She told the patrolman that
    was exactly what had occurred.

The patrolman said this warning should be listed,
on the driver's seat sun-visor - NEVER USE THE
    CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE PAVEMENT
IS WET OR ICY, along with the airbag warning. We
tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive a safe
speed - but we don't tell them to use the cruise control
only when the pavement is dry.

The only person the accident victim found, who
knew this (besides the patrolman), was a man who had
had a similar accident, totaled his car and sustained
    severe injuries.

NOTE: Some vehicles when the windshield wipers are on, you cannot
set the cruise control. Like the Toyota Sienna Limited XLE is one of them.

    Are we there yet?

A professor has solved the age old problem of determining the answer to the question:  on a long car ride, how long before the kids ask "Are we there yet?"

The mathematical explanation is that the time it takes for a child to ask the question equals: one, plus the number of activities to do, divided by the number of children in the car squared.

To get the final answer, that figure is then added to the time it took the family to get into the car and set off on their journey.

Now, how long before parents say:  "Don't make me stop this car and go back there."   This is 2 * "Are we there yet?"

The Dark Side of Google Earth

An interesting blog of the world's worst places is sprol.com.   Pollution, toxic dumps, ecological disasters, manmade disasters, runoff, poisons,  etc...  Called "the dark side of Google Earth,"negative eco-tourism."  Lots of satellite imagery and explanations....

    Ride Through Ghost Town

A fascinating website you may enjoy is by Elena Filatova.

Her website is a mixture of photography, photo-journalism, and writing.  The travel photography album on her motorcycle jaunt through the abandoned streets and towns of Chernobyl, made famous of course by the nuclear accident, titled "Ghost Town" is rather compelling.  Similarly interesting is the album titled "Kiev" where she mucks through abandoned WWII battlefield. There is a message here that rather powerfully emerges.

And not to be missed is her collection of short stories titled "Echoes of Trapped Voices."

Did I mention she is a great writer?
